Error Messages

The most common email problem is when you are able to receive email, but not send. You will also likely see an error message like this:

Error: 554 : Relay access denied.

Our mail server uses authentication to prevent spam from being sent through our server. You will need to enable authentication in your email client in order to send mail. Find the section below that corresponds to your email client and Operating System, and follow the directions to enable authentication.

Outlook Express - MS Windows

  • In Outlook Express: on the 'Tools' menu, select 'Accounts...'.
  • Select the account you are using and click 'Properties'.
  • Click the tab labeled 'Servers'.
  • Ensure the following setting is checked 'My Server Requires Authentication'.
  • Click the 'settings' button located next to the authentication check box.
  • Ensure the following option is selected: 'Use same settings as my Incoming Mail Server'
  • Click the 'OK' buttons twice, then the 'close' button. Your settings have been updated and you should now be able to send mail.


Outlook 2007 - MS Window

  • In Outlook: on the 'Tools' menu, select 'E-mail Accounts...'.
  • Select 'View or change email accounts'.
  • Click 'More Settings'.
  • Click the tab labeled 'Outgoing Server'.
  • Ensure the following settings are all checked: 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication', 'Use same settings as my Incoming Mail Server' and 'Log on to Incoming Mail Server before sending'.
  • Click the 'OK' button, click 'Next', then click 'Finish'. Your settings have been updated and you should now be able to send mail.


Outlook 2002 - MS Window

  • In Outlook: on the 'Tools' menu, select 'E-mail Accounts...'.
  • Select 'View or change email accounts'.
  • Click 'More Settings'.
  • Click the tab labeled 'Outgoing Server'.
  • Ensure the following setting is checked: 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'. Also ensure the option 'Use same settings as my Incoming Mail Server' is also selected.
  • Click the 'OK' button, click 'Next', then click 'Finish'. Your settings have been updated and you should now be able to send mail.


Outlook 2000 - MS Windows

  • In Outlook: on the 'Tools' menu, select 'services...'.
  • Select 'Internet Mail - (your account name)', then click 'Properties'.
  • Click the tab labeled 'Servers'.
  • Ensure the following setting is checked 'My Server Requires Authentication'.
  • Click the 'settings' button located next to the authentication check box.
  • Ensure the following option is selected: 'Use same settings as my Incoming Mail Server'
  • Click the 'OK' buttons three times. Your settings have been updated and you should now be able to send mail.

Mozilla Thunderbird

  • In Thunderbird: on the 'Tools' menu, select 'Account Settings'.
  • Select 'Outgoing Server(SMTP)' from the list on the left.
  • Pick your Cedar Mountain Software outgoing server from the list (it should be 'mail.jcsecure.com'), and click 'Edit'.
  • Under 'Security and Authentication', check 'Use name and password'. For 'User Name' enter your email username, then click 'Ok'.


Eudora 6 and newer - Mac OS X

  • Back up your settings as described here.
  • Open a new email message, and paste into the body: ""
  • Double click the link that will appear, and in the window click "Set Setting"
  • Restart Eudora

Eudora 4.3 and newer - MS Windows

  • In Eudora: in the side-menu, select the 'Personalities' tab (the tab has an icon of two faces).
  • Select your mail account, right click it and select 'Properties'.
  • Under 'SMTP Server', ensure the following option is checked: 'Authentication Allowed'.
  • Click the 'OK' button. Your settings have been updated and you should now be able to send mail.


Eudora 4.2 and earlier - MS Windows

  • Close Eudora.
  • Go to the EUDORA.INI file on your hard drive. This file should be found in the C:\EUDORA or C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora directories.
  • Open the INI file with Notepad and add the following two lines to the [Settings] section:
    SMTPAuthRequired=1
    SMTPAuthAllowed=1
  • Save the file, and restart Eudora. If you receive a 550 error when sending mail, check the INI file for errors and try again.


MSN 8 - MS Windows

  • In MSN 8, select on the top menubar: Help & Settings > Additional E-Mail Accounts Settings > Edit Account > Advanced Settings.
  • Switch to the last page, and near the bottom, find the heading 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)'.
  • Select the option labeled 'Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication'.
  • Select the second option labeled 'Use same settings as incoming mail server'.
